Re-creation of the Command Bunker at 18 Mila St.

At the Yad Mordechai Museum, the main command bunker of the Jewish Fighting Organization (Zydowska Organizacja Bojowa – ZOB) at 18 Mila St. in Warsaw was re-created out of its ruins in a life-size reconstruction of one of its rooms. A bunker of this kind was used by the Jewish Fighting Organization, under the command of Mordechai Anielewicz, during the final days of the fighting. It became a symbol of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

The gallery contains items that were typical of the period: wooden bunks, items of clothing, weapons, documents, pictures, and documentary and narrative films that illustrate the living conditions of the fighters and the inhabitants of the ghetto hiding deep below ground.

In the bunker, we find a slick containing Molotov cocktails, the weapons that were smuggled into the ghetto, and the entry to the bunker from within the ruins of the houses above it. Visiting the bunker allows visitors to get to know the unique personalities of the commander of the Uprising, Mordechai Anielewicz, and his fellow fighters, most of whom died in this bunker. Emphasis is also placed on the tens of thousands of ghetto inhabitants who took part in the Uprising by not complying with the deportation laws.
