A Model of the Warsaw Ghetto

This exhibit consists of a unique, one-of-a-kind 3D model of the 150 houses that were located within the limits of the Warsaw Ghetto, when it was sealed around its residents in November 1940. The houses are built on a scale of 1:100. The appearance of the ghetto and the houses is based on maps of Warsaw and pre-war photos of the homes themselves.

Among the houses of the ghetto, the model features the Great Synagogue on Tłomackie St., the Nożyk Synagogue, the Jewish cemetery, Janusz Korczak’s orphanage, the collection point (“Umschlagplatz”), the “shops” (German factories), the Jewish institutions, the ghetto walls, and more.

Overlooking the model is a bridge on which visitors can stand, symbolizing the bridge that connected the two parts of the ghetto, which was split by Chlodna St.

Video mapping is projected onto the model, depicting and illustrating life in the Warsaw Ghetto from the day of the closure of the walls surrounding it until its liquidation in May 1943. The model and the display enable visitors to learn about everyday life in the ghetto and the measures that were taken in preparation for the armed resistance that was planned for the day the Germans would try to liquidate the ghetto for good.
